Anyone who even remotely followed the news this whole week will know that certain members of the United Nations have been busy cooking up a little something special. Now im sure we all know that veto is latin for "I forbid", but for the UN security council it means a little more. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council (i.e. US, China, UK, Russia and France) take it one step further and like to use it as their special trump card. Interestingly enough, a veto only gives power to stop changes rather than adopt them. So basically a veto therefore conveys to its holder an ability to protect the current status-quo. Case in point? Russia and China!
So ive seen and heard many people talk about this all week now but something tells me they have no idea what is going on. Most of them are like what is wrong with China and Russia, wth!!!?? why are they so evil? Dont they care about humanity and all those human right being violated in Syria? To be honest im not surprised they used their veto power on this one. Dont get me wrong, it doesnt make it any less wrong but i see why they would do such a thing.
What are our Russian friends know for? you got it weapons!! ironically enough i wasnt even trying to be poetic. i know it sounds like a russian mafia movie but its true. Actually Russia is probably one of the largest arms suppliers to Syria. With that in mind, which Russian in thier right mind would call and end to the violence in Syria and promote peace! I cant remember the exact figures right now but i think they came in the ballpark of around 5 billion give or take. That is the value of security contracts Syria has with the Russian defense industry. Not awesome enough for ya? Well get this ..... Tartus (the 2nd largest port in Syira) hosts a naval supply and maintenance base dating back to the Soviet era, under a 1971 agreement with Syria, which is still staffed by Russian naval personnel. The base was established during the Cold War as it was Russia's only path into the support the Soviet Navy fleet in the Mediterranean Sea.
And what about our tech savvy Chinese friends? Well my guess is as good as any but i think China's main concern is its economic development by means of trade through the "Silk Road". I suck at geography but if im not mistaken China has a vested interest in Syria which it considers a vital trading hub! Any regime change might as a bump in the road to China's economic development.
Yes 'tis a crazy world we live in full of hidden agendas and national interest even if its at the expense of millions of innocent civilians.
